Weekly Reflection – Week 6 Sep to 17 Sep 2025

Weekly Reflection (6 Sept – 17 Sept 2025)

The past ten days have been a mixture of job search intensity, community commitments, family life, and church fellowship. Writing this reflection helps me trace the threads together — to see how each area, in its own way, is shaping me.

Career & Job Search

I put steady effort into applications this week, tailoring my CV for roles at Barings, BCG, NTT DATA, Robert Walters, and Capgemini. Some of these roles stretch me to reframe my experience — especially around governance frameworks and product ownership. The Amex interview reflections are still fresh in my mind; I’m learning that when interviewers recap or expand on my answers, it’s not a signal that I failed, but a chance to engage further and show flexibility.

I also thought about the UK job market for accountants after helping a friend explore returner options. It reminded me again how competitive things are, and how much emphasis employers place on recent, directly relevant experience — something I’ve also been wrestling with in my own search.

Community Engagement

Freshwater Foundation work continued with a number of calls and preparations: Heston in the Community, Food with Love, and Elevate Community Productions. Each group has different needs — some seek grants, others sponsorship, others guidance on structure. I’ve been reflecting on my role as a “catalyst” rather than a fixer, and how to keep the first calls focused on discovery, not qualification. Mark’s style often comes to mind as a benchmark.

Heston in the Community、Food with Love 和 Elevate Community Productions 的多個會議和準備。

Family & Personal Life

On the family side, there have been lighter but meaningful moments: checking school matters, advising my wife how to use AI to prepare bible classes, and trimming the garden tree became a small but satisfying project too.

I’m also very happy that my son has joined some inter-school chess competitions. It’s encouraging to see him stepping out, not only enjoying the game but also representing himself and his school in a wider arena. These small steps of growth remind me how important it is to support and celebrate each stage of our children’s journey.

I’ve also been thinking about how to better communicate with my parents’ generation — especially around faith. Understanding the worldview (“三觀”) of the older generation is not easy, but it’s an important step for me as I consider how to share the gospel with my family overseas.

Faith & Church

This period also involved preparing for church service on 28 Sept — drafting the order of service, selecting hymns, checking copyright issues, and preparing WhatsApp messages.

Another area on my mind has been our church website. I’ve started thinking about how to bring in more people to help with the revamp — not just to spread the workload, but also to build shared ownership. Beyond the technical side, I see this as a ministry opportunity: training others, giving them a chance to serve, and making sure the church has a sustainable way to manage content and costs in the long run.

Last Saturday, we also hosted a cell group gathering at my home, with 16 people joining. We sang hymns together and shared a time of prayer. It was a very special moment for me — not just for the fellowship, but for the sense of God’s presence in our midst.

Personal Growth

One area I keep revisiting is my communication style. From job interviews to community meetings, I notice my tendency to over-explain or use filler words. I’ve been practicing more concise “soundbites” and smoother English phrasing. Even small things, like how to express myself politely in calls, have become learning opportunities.

Closing Thoughts

Looking back, this period has been busy but fruitful. I’m learning to juggle career pressures, community roles, family needs, and spiritual service — and to see them not as competing demands, but as interconnected parts of my journey. My prayer is to stay faithful in small things, courageous in bigger steps, and attentive to God’s quiet presence in the midst of it all.

Weekly Reflection – Week 6 Aug to 5 Sep 2025

📌 Week 1: August 6 – August 10
The most significant event this week was my parents-in-law finishing their visit to the UK and flying back to Hong Kong on August 10. Their stay, though not long, was very fulfilling. Although our plan to visit France or other European destinations didn’t work out, travelling together with the children to Cambridge, Oxford, and nearby places gave them deep satisfaction. The children were especially happy having their grandparents with them, creating many unforgettable memories. As parents, I hope that next time they return, they will witness the children’s healthy and joyful growth—and more profoundly, I pray that they will one day put their trust in Jesus and receive eternal life from Him.

At the same time, beyond family life, I also enjoyed some personal space. This week, I played tennis with a few dad friends, and Joshua joined in. It reminded me that sports are not just about fitness but also about bonding with children and strengthening friendships. As a father, I treasure these moments—seeing my kids engage in group activities while I too can be part of it fills my heart with gratitude.

On the job search front, The AA contacted me to arrange an interview, marking the next step in my career journey. Receiving the invitation itself was already an encouragement, helping me focus more on preparation.

Overall, this week was filled with family joy and faith-driven hope, along with small progress in my job search. Looking back, I am most thankful for family companionship and faith heritage. In the job process, I am learning to present myself with greater maturity and confidence.

📌 Week 2: August 11 – August 17
This week’s focus was on family, job search, and service. The children officially started tennis training, and on Friday evening Amber even joined me and the other dads to play. Seeing her cheerful smile while enjoying sports showed me a new side of her growth. As parents, we believe sports not only strengthen the body but also build character and discipline. Amber’s lively spirit in the group brought me great joy.

On the job side, my AA interview did not go too smoothly. I felt nervous and stumbled through my English responses. On the other hand, the opportunity with Amex began to unfold. I had a call with the hiring manager, which gave me clarity on what they expect from candidates and helped me see areas I need to strengthen. To prepare, I kept using the STAR framework to organize my past project experiences, reflecting on my role and impact in each case.

In church service, the PowerPoint team continued serving steadily, but I began to realize the need for a more systematic approach. I arranged a sharing session where Alice and Fanny demonstrated their techniques for beautifying slides. Everyone learned something new, which improved our effectiveness as a team.

This week taught me a deep lesson: leadership is not about how well I perform personally, but about how I make use of the team’s resources and combine different gifts. Seeing my children’s growth and the way brothers and sisters complement each other reminded me that true leadership is about “equipping others.”

📌 Week 3: August 18 – August 24
The third week brought both challenges and encouragement.

In family life, I got to play tennis with my wife and kids. Although rain cut our session short, the laughter we shared on the court was priceless. Seeing the children become more engaged in sports touched me deeply. These simple yet real moments of happiness reminded me of the value of family time.

On August 24, we had a special gathering with Joanna and Eric, and with Eva and Simon, who visited us in Woking. Eva and Simon had ties to Hop Yat Church in Hong Kong and were also close to Pastor Tsui. During our time together, we shared about my job search journey, and they shared how their career paths in the UK had ups and downs, but by God’s grace they restarted and eventually became education consultants. Their testimony encouraged me greatly. Eva in particular reminded me to be more confident. Just at that moment, my Amex interview was postponed, giving me more preparation time—her encouragement came at the perfect time, showing me again that God’s timetable is always just right.

My reflection this week: waiting is not always a bad thing. Sometimes it is God’s way of helping me be better prepared. Through family companionship and friends’ encouragement, I learned deeper trust and confirmed that this is truly a journey led by God.

📌 Week 4: August 25 – August 31
This week was a mix of job search, family, volunteering, and church—full of challenges and grace.

For job preparation, my Amex technical interview was delayed a week because I wasn’t feeling well. At first I worried it might leave a bad impression, but in hindsight the delay gave me valuable time to prepare. I practiced intensively, recording myself on Webex to review my voice, smile, and expressions. Though awkward at first, this practice built confidence and made me realize public speaking and professional communication are skills I must keep improving. This experience confirmed my decision to join Toastmasters for more practice.

The Amex technical interview itself was one of the toughest I’ve faced. The interviewer not only asked scenarios but kept pressing with follow-ups, forcing me to analyze deeply on the spot. It was mentally exhausting, but thankfully I managed to handle it and passed. This showed me that beyond technical knowledge, logical thinking and leadership judgment are essential to succeed.

On the family side, we met with five families in Milton Keynes. Because of rain, outdoor activities were cancelled, but we switched to indoor bowling and trampolines for the kids, finishing with dinner together. Though plans changed, the joy of fellowship remained. Reflecting on how we grew up together in Hong Kong church groups more than a decade ago, and now see our children growing up together in the UK, I felt God’s grace so strongly. This cross-time, cross-place companionship is one of the most beautiful things about a spiritual family.

In volunteering, with CEO Mark on holiday, I had to independently follow up with community groups and conduct impact assessment interviews. It pushed me out of my comfort zone—digging through old emails and documents, taking initiative to handle projects. Though stressful, it was a good opportunity to grow in leadership and responsibility. Mark also arranged a governance workshop in early October for a community group, another valuable chance to learn.

At church, I served as worship leader on August 31. I was very nervous. Reviewing the recording later, I saw many areas for improvement, like reading scripture incorrectly and speaking less smoothly. Yet I was reminded: mistakes are not the end but the beginning of growth. By reviewing, I now know how to improve next time.

My reflection this week: challenges are not setbacks but opportunities to grow. Whether in career, family, volunteering, or church, God uses different contexts to shape me. With community support and God’s guidance, I am never alone.

📌 Week 5: September 1 – September 5
This week centered on the final stage of job searching and small moments in family life.

I had my third Amex interview, this time with a US-based interviewer. It was originally scheduled for Thursday but moved to Friday, giving me one more day to prepare. I saw this small detail as God’s grace. The interview was still challenging, but I felt relatively stable. Looking back objectively, my chance of being hired is less than 50%. Interestingly, my former colleague CM used ChatGPT to generate interview questions for me, and the angles were refreshing, covering areas I hadn’t thought about. This reminded me that preparation shouldn’t rely only on myself but also on making good use of resources and networks around me. In the future, as a leader, I must also learn to appreciate and integrate different perspectives to create real synergy.

At the same time, Tesco officially confirmed their Technical Program Manager role had been filled. Although weeks of silence had already prepared me for this, the formal notice still brought mixed feelings—relief for closure, but also disappointment. Yet I realized when some doors close, it means God has prepared another path ahead.

In family life, my son showed more maturity by suggesting he should sleep earlier to prepare for school. Though not consistent every night, the intention itself showed he was learning time management. He also mentioned his school trousers were too tight, and my wife immediately ordered new ones. Seeing his growth physically, emotionally, and spiritually filled us with gratitude. My daughter restarted skating lessons and even asked for a private coach to progress faster. For piano lessons, my son is still looking for the right teacher—we hope not to miss the golden window.

After my September 5 interview, I joined some dads to play tennis with our daughters. Amber and Bell, being close in age, played happily together. Kayi, though younger and with farsightedness, found tennis harder but had great fun playing “monkey chase” with me. Normally she prefers reading to sports, but thanks to her Bible class friendship with Amber, she was willing to join this time. I hope this gradually builds her physical strength and healthy habits.

At home, my wife worked on handling sibling conflicts by introducing new rules: they can enter each other’s rooms but must respect privacy, and can ask the other to leave. The effectiveness remains to be seen, but I appreciated her growing authority and initiative in managing family needs.

In church, a new brother Tony joined the service team. I shared lots of materials with him at once—perhaps too much—but I hope this will lead to pushing the worship leading handbook into formal review, making our team more stable. Back in January, I drafted an initial handbook using AI to help new leaders adapt more quickly. Though still only a draft, I believe it will be an important step for the future of our team.

My reflection this week: in job search, some doors close and others open—reminding me to trust God’s timing; in family, children’s gradual growth is my greatest thanksgiving; and in service, I need to learn to implement and drive progress, not just stop at first drafts.

🔹 1. The High Point: A Kentish Reset

From 21 to 25 July, we took a coastal family break to Kent. Six of us shared a caravan at Seaview Holiday Park, joined by Law’s family. The experience was simple yet meaningful—the children played and bonded, while we adults shared meals, conversations, and laughter.

On the first day, we stopped by Mercedes-Benz World (Brooklands Museum) before checking in. Highlights included Margate Beach, Dreamland amusement park, Whitstable Pier, and Kent Life Farm Park. Later, in Canterbury, we stumbled upon a university graduation ceremony, which allowed us free entry into the cathedral. The kids loved the swimming pool, but their favourite moment was the thrill of Dreamland—especially the roller coaster and water slide boat.

One beautiful evening, Law’s family brought out a Korean BBQ stove. We grilled under the open sky, sipped cold drinks, and had heartfelt conversations that lingered into the night.

That night became even more special as I saw Law’s family share their faith with my parents-in-law. I was also asked about my grandfather’s spiritual journey—a cue for me to better prepare my own testimony in future.

Another evening, we sat by the fire and prayed together for Law’s parenting journey. It struck me how challenging and sacred the role of a parent is. I encouraged them to focus on the legacy they hope to pass on to their children and future generations—a vision that could guide their every step.

This trip was more than a break—it was the emotional high point of the month. I was reminded that peace doesn’t require perfection. Being fully present with loved ones restores something deeper than rest. I returned recharged and realigned.

Special thanks to Jackson and Jess for looking after our plants during our time away.

第一日,我哋去咗 Mercedes-Benz World(Brooklands Museum)參觀,之後先去 check-in。

🔹 2. Letting Go and Moving Forward

My final interview with Tesco took place on 15 July. As of early August, it’s clear the opportunity won’t proceed. While disappointing, I had mentally prepared myself and was able to move on with clarity. The experience helped refine how I communicate my stories and reinforced what I value most in a workplace: a culture where delivery and trust are aligned.

From 16 July, I re-entered the job market with renewed focus, revising my CVs and cover letters. On 17 July, I submitted a wave of applications across cybersecurity, transformation, and data security roles—rebuilding the discipline of crafting tailored messages and staying hopeful.

I also redesigned my CV into a concise one-pager, moving away from a verbose two-page format. It now feels cleaner and more professional. Encouragingly, the pace of rejections has slowed slightly—a small signal that the improvements might be paying off. I’ll see more clearly after the summer.

🔹 3. Supporting Community Growth: Listening and Structuring

Through the Freshwater Foundation, I continued attending community project updates as a management advisor. I’ve been learning from Mark on how to facilitate interviews for impact assessments and have transitioned from a passive observer to someone who contributes structured questions to help identify social impact, unblock challenges, and clarify governance gaps for grassroots groups.

In response to some groups’ hesitancy to form formal committees, I created a committee setup guide and a governance starter pack to provide confidence and clarity. These are now pending Mark’s review.

AI tools have become unexpectedly useful—helping summarise meetings, transcribe conversations, and even interpret casual expressions. It’s a quiet upgrade in my English comprehension. I hope to eventually speak more naturally and connect more easily with locals. For now, I might be at level 2 or 3, but level 5 is the goal.

🔹 4. Restarting the Blue Team Mission

With Tesco behind me, I resumed the Blue Team mission at our church’s Chinese congregation. We're now refreshing the newsletter and rebuilding the website. I'm grateful to have one sister leading the newsletter and another sister and brother planning the website.

To build momentum, we’ve organised a technical sharing session on 6 August, where Fannie and Alice will demonstrate how they use AI tools (such as NightCafe) to design visuals, match fonts and colour palettes, and enhance presentation slides. I'm excited to learn from them and elevate our visual storytelling.

🔹 5. A Spiritual Encounter: Lee Ning’s Testimony

On 18 July, my wife and I met our long-time friend Lee Ning and her husband Tom for lunch during their visit to the UK. Lee Ning shared her remarkable testimony—how she was diagnosed with late-stage cancer while in China, and yet, through grace and healing, she experienced a full recovery.

Her story deeply touched me. It was a powerful reminder that miracles can happen even in the darkest valleys. I left the lunch spiritually refreshed and reminded of the importance of faith, especially in uncertain times.

We’re looking forward to seeing our friends Joanna and Eric in two weeks. I hope our reunion will be equally uplifting.

🔹 6. Gaining Clarity: What’s Next?

Since returning from Kent, I’ve resumed job applications and attended webinars—including one on AI governance. I've started reflecting on how I could eventually deliver similar content and establish a voice in areas like digital trust.

More importantly, I’m gaining clarity about where I truly thrive: in environments that value clarity, integrity, and meaningful execution.

These past few weeks weren’t just transitional—they were transformative. By letting go of what I couldn’t control, leaning into community service, and embracing rest, I gained the perspective I needed to move forward with renewed intention.

Weekly Reflection – Week 29 June 2025

**🗓 Weekly Reflectio(29/June) **

1. Stratesys Opportunity – Still Waiting
I followed up on the Stratesys role and received a reply from the first interviewer. There’s no update yet, which leaves things hanging, but I remain hopeful that it will move forward to the next stage. It’s a test of patience and trust in the process.

2. Unexpected Call from Tesco
I received a call from Tesco regarding a Programme Manager role. I’ve applied for a few roles with them, and I believe this one relates to cyber security. It’s encouraging to see movement from that direction, and I’ll stay alert and prepared in case it moves to the next stage. Every step forward counts.

3. Supporting a Friend Through Setback
My friend P wasn’t able to get through the first interview, and it’s impacted his self-esteem significantly. It’s hard seeing someone close go through that kind of discouragement. I’m hoping he’ll recover from the blow and bounce back stronger. Sometimes the right words are less important than just being present.

4. Encouraging D in His Job Search
Had a meaningful 2-hour conversation with D, who is still in Hong Kong and looking for his next opportunity. He’s been searching for months since last December. I tried to offer support and share parts of my experience that might help him. I hope it was a source of encouragement and clarity in a tough season for him.

💭 Closing Thought
This week reminded me that waiting is uncomfortable, and discouragement is real — but also that presence and empathy are powerful. Even small gestures can help others feel less alone in the struggle.

1. Stratesys

2. Tesco

Prepared by AI. English version was edited by Jeff on 23/06/2025 由人工智能協助撰寫,英文版本由Jeff於2025年6月23日編輯

1. A Week of Transitions and Commitments

This week was full of movement — both literally and figuratively. From completing the car transition, helping others, connecting with old and new friends, and handling interviews, I saw moments of grace and gratitude woven throughout the busyness.

2. Selling the Car – A Smooth and Blessed Closure

Last Tuesday, I successfully sold my car through Motorway. It took about 7 days and a few customer service calls, but the car was sold at the highest quote I received. I thank God for such favour.
The car collector, Jason, was memorable — a father of seven who used to drive a van when his kids were younger. His thorough inspection of my car (with so many photos of dents, chips, and tiny imperfections) was intense — almost scary — but in the end, he reported everything as normal wear and tear. There were no deductions at all. What a blessing!

3. A New Ride – Pickup and Family Joy

I was deeply blessed by my third aunt, who helped drive me and my wife to Wimbledon to pick up the new car. The process went smoothly, though I noticed the boot cover pole was missing — hoping the seller can help sort that. The kids love the car; the second row is spacious and comfortable.
I pray this car will serve us well — starting with a family holiday in July with my parents-in-law. My wife will need to get used to the car’s size, but I have full confidence in her.

4. Stratesys Interview – An Unexpected Door

I had an interview on Friday with Stratesys, a Spanish consulting company with 1,800 employees across 10 countries in Europe and the Americas. Although the firm is known for SAP work, this UK-based role interestingly focused on Microsoft technologies. The interview was conducted by a German colleague who seemed more delivery-focused than a formal hiring manager — likely supporting multiple functions including hiring and marketing.
With a lot of prayer and support from church brothers and sisters, I felt unusually calm and composed throughout the session. It was a reminder that divine grace often carries us in unexpected moments.

5. A Special Reunion – Picking Up Didi from Heathrow

A heartwarming highlight was reconnecting with Didi — my first mentor from IBM back in 2005. I had the joy of picking him up from Heathrow and chatting during the hour-long drive to his hotel. We hadn’t met in 5–6 years, and it felt special.
Later in the week, I went to four different places to find him a gift that would represent the UK well — not an easy task in my area, but I enjoyed the challenge. His visit came on short notice, but I’m glad I was able to respond meaningfully.

6. Blue Team Review – A Spirit of Service

On 22 June, our Blue Team had a review meeting after three months of serving in worship slide preparation. Shirley and Sau kindly prepared lunch, and Pastor’s wife brought a delicious Chinese-style rice dish — a lovely gesture that lifted the team’s spirits.
Though our role was simple — preparing PowerPoint slides to support the worship leader — the experience brought joy and meaning. The team enjoyed having a way to serve others quietly but helpfully, making worship more seamless.

7. Men’s Breakfast – Fellowship and Connection

Saturday’s men’s breakfast was another meaningful gathering. I invited Radar, and six of us turned up in total. Clifford and Radar both share a love for tennis — I hope they connect more. James continues striving to grow his business, and I wish him strength. Keith seemed a bit quieter than usual — I’ll keep him in prayer. These gatherings help keep us connected through different life stages.

8. Helping a Friend – Mock Interview & Feedback

I spent meaningful time helping a friend prepare for a civil service interview. Coaching someone reminded me of my own journey — and it was satisfying to apply structured thinking, provide scorecards, and offer encouragement.

9. Lessons and Gratitude

  • Lesson: Blessings often come through people — whether it's help with transport, a fair collector, or an encouraging word during an interview.

  • Gratitude: Grateful for the favour with the car sale, joy of a new car, smooth interview, Didi’s visit, and moments of service and connection throughout the week.

Looking Ahead

Next week, I hope to:

  • Follow up on the Stratesys interview and other job leads

  • Address remaining items on the new car (boot cover, insurance setup)

  • Make space to reflect, rest, and reconnect intentionally with family and God
